So you think you’re ready for that all important interview, do you?
You’ve worked tirelessly on your resume until it was 100% perfect. You’ve done your due diligence in researching the company you’ll be meeting with so you’re not only prepped for the questions they may ask you, but also whatever queries you may want to bring up to them. Your wardrobe is all set to go in order to make that indelible and professional impression. And, even though you might be a little bit nervous or anxious about that impending face-to-face meeting, you’re nonetheless well-rested thanks to a good night’s sleep.
Therefore, there’s nothing else to do, right?
There’s one other very important factor that you might forget or underestimate, and that’s what type of meal you should eat before the interview. If not covered correctly, it could render all of those other steps useless.
Just as fine-tuned athletes make sure their bodies are well-fueled in getting ready for competition, the same can be said for the pre-interview meal. Having a well-balanced, nutritious diet in advance of an interview is a key element if you’re going to perform at your best.
In order to have your mind sharp on the day of your meeting you should eat foods that contain Omega 3 fatty acids, which can be found in eggs, milk, juice, yogurt, salmon and kale. Also helpful would be whole grains, which can contribute to keeping you mentally alert and focused. A slice of whole wheat bread, a cup of brown cereal, or a small bowl of oatmeal would fit nicely from this category.
If you want to keep your energy level high, then contemplate foods that contain Vitamin B. That means the night before your interview consider eating a dinner consisting of meat with greens such as spinach, broccoli or peas.
Equally important as to what you should be ingesting before that interview is what you should be avoiding. A total no-no are both garlic and onions, and they should be cut out of your diet at least 24 hours in advance of that all-important interview. Firstly, your breath will convey a smelly odor. And secondly, foods with garlic or onions have a tendency to repeat on you. The last thing you want to do when responding to questions in an interview is to have an ugly stench emanating from your mouth – or maybe worse – having to belch. Remember that both are no-no’s because they’re guaranteed to turn-off the interviewer.
Also, too many carbohydrates such as potatoes, bread or pasta might impair your alertness, so make sure you keep them to a minimum. The same goes for coffee, which while as a stimulant will make you alert but also has the tendency of producing hyperactivity. And when it comes to water, don’t drink too much before the meeting if you want to avoid running to the bathroom.
And one other thing….if you believe that simply not eating at all will be a wise decision, think again. There is nothing advantageous about doing anything on an empty stomach, especially when you want to be at your best and seeking to impress.
